| BRIEF HISTORY
Welcome to the holy Cathedral Church of the Holy Great Martyr, Saint
George 'the Trophy-Bearer', the oldest Romanian Orthodox parish in
Michigan, "mother church" of the Romanian Community of metropolitan
Detroit, and the historic Throne of the Romanian Orthodox Archbishop of
Detroit and North America.
Founded
in 1912 by immigrants who came from Romania in search of work in
Detroit’s new auto industry, St George has always played an important
role in the life of The Romanian Orthodox Episcopate (diocese) of
America. It has been honored by the visits of many civic/ecclesiastic
authorities, royalty, etc. The first hierarch, Bishop POLICARP (Moruşca),
was enthroned here on July 4, 1935, as designated by the Patriarchate of
Romania. Thus, St George became the cathedral or "Throne Church" of
diocesan hierarchs: Archbishop VALERIAN (Trifa), and the current Ruling
Hierarch, His Eminence Archbishop NATHANIEL (Popp), consecrated November
15, 1980.
While its primary mission is as a parish community,
St George Cathedral holds a unique place in the history of the North
American Romanian Orthodox community. In 1929 it hosted the founding
congress of the diocese; and many subsequent historic events.
It has
welcomed venerable hierarchs, esteemed theologians, Romanian royalty
(e.g. King Michael in 1949), Romanian President Emil Constantinescu
(1999), Ambassadors, Governors and many other federal, state and local
civic personalities for solemn liturgical services and significant
gatherings. On November 2, 2002, His Grace Bishop IRINEU was consecrated
at St George’s Altar, as Auxiliary Bishop of the diocese.
The Cathedral parish is composed of several
hundred souls of various ethnic heritages, third generation
Romanian-Americans, and a growing number of those newly-arrived from
Romania. Services are celebrated in both the Romanian and English
languages.
In faith and practice, the Orthodox Christian Church
is the organic continuation of the One, Holy, Catholic and Apostolic,
True Church established by Jesus Christ. She maintains, without addition
or subtraction, the faith, "once and for all delivered to the saints",
and taught by the Apostles since the day of Pentecost, two millennia
ago. She is the Biblical Church revealed in the pages of the New
Testament.
The doors of the Cathedral are open to all who seek
God’s Truth! Join us for worship, Christian fellowship, and to learn
more about Orthodox Christianity. We are a friendly family and we would
love to welcome you home to the 'Mother Church' of Christianity.
SCURT ISTORIC
Bine Ati Venit la Catedrala
Sf. Mare Martir, Sf.
.jpg)
Fondata in 1912 de catre imigrantii sositi din Romania in cautare de
lucru in industria
de automobile din Detroit, Biserica Sf. Gheorghe a jucat din totdeauna
un rol important in viata Episcopiei Ortodoxe Romane a Americii.
ierahilor: Arhiepiscopul VALERIAN (Trifa), si a actualului ierarh, Inalt
Prea Sfintia Sa Arhiepiscopul NATHANIEL (Popp), hirotonit pe 15
noiembrie, 1980.
Gheorghe detine un loc unic in istoria Comunitatii Ortodoxe Romane
Nord-Americane. In 1929 a gazduit congresul fondator al Episcopiei;
Regele Mihai in 1929), ex-presedintele Romaniei D-l Emil
Constantinescu (1999), ambasadori, guvernatori, si multe alte
personalitati federale, de stat sau civile in cadrul a diferite servicii
liturgice si adunari importante. Pe 2 noiembrie 2002, Prea Sfintia Sa
Episcopul IRINEU a fost hirotonit in altarul catedralei Sf. Gheorghe, ca
si Vicar al Episcopiei.
Parohia Catedralei Sf. Gheorghe are in componenta sa cateva sute de
In
continuatoarea organica a celei Una, Sfanta, Soborniceasca si
Apostoleasca Biserica infiintata de Iisus Hristos. Ea pastreaza, fara a
Ea este Biserica Evangheliei mentionata in
paginile Noului Testament.
Suntem o
familie primitoare si ne-ar face deosebita placere sa va primim in sanul
„Bisericii Mama” a Crestinismului.
