Episcopate's Joint Dialogue Commission
Meetings with Church of Romania, February 2008
 

 [News Release - ROEA Joint Dialogue Commission]    Prompted by the ongoing dialogue between the two Romanian Orthodox eparchies in North America, the Episcopate requested the initiation of direct talks with the Church of Romania.  As explained in a letter to all parishes, the intent of such talks was to clarify and seek a mutual understanding of certain historical issues between the Mother Church of Romania and the ROEA, the plight of its departed hierarchs, and related issues.  Having received a favorable response to its request, the members of the Episcopate’s Joint Dialogue Commission, led by His Eminence Archbishop Nathaniel, traveled to Bucharest, Romania for meetings on February 25, 26 and 27, 2008.  The Commission is composed of Very Rev Frs Laurence Lazar (Chair), Remus Grama, Catalin Mitescu, Ian Pac-Urar, and Romey Rosco.

While in Bucharest, the delegation participated in a Liturgy on St Policarp day at Antim Monastery, and was welcomed at Pasarea and Cernica Monasteries.  On Sunday, February 24, His Eminence was invited to be the celebrant of the Divine Liturgy in the Patriarchal Cathedral, assisted by the Episcopate and Cathedral Clergy.

The next day, the delegation was cordially welcomed by His Beatitude Patriarch Daniel who personally monitored the ensuing discussions and hosted several meals and a working session in the Patriarchal residence.  The Episcopate delegation and the specially constituted Patriarchal Commission chaired by His Eminence Archbishop (now Metropolitan) Nifon of Târgovişte, with His Eminence Archbishop Nicolae (Romanian Orthodox Archdiocese of the Two Americas), His Grace Bishop Ciprian Câmpineanul, Patriarchal Vicar, Patriarchal Councilors Frs. Mircea Uţa, and Ioan Armaşi, held several rounds of frank discussions in a promising spirit of Christian brotherhood.  The talks resulted in a mutually agreed upon statement.

In addition to the above, and in terms of the unwarranted establishment of a self-proclaimed Romanian Exarchate in America, the JDC hopefully helped the Church of Romania better understand American pastoral realities.

[Comunicat de Presa - ROEA Comisia de Dialog]    În contextul dialogului existent între cele două eparhii Ortodoxe Române din America de Nord, Episcopia noastră a cerut iniţierea unor convorbiri directe cu Biserica Ortodoxă din România.  După cum s-a explicat în scrisoarea către parohii, intenţia acestor convorbiri a fost aceea de a clarifica şi căuta o înţelegere reciprocă a problemelor istorice dintre Biserica-Mamă şi ROEA, suferinţele foştilor ei Ierarhi şi alte subiecte asemănătoare.  În urma primirii unui răspuns favorabil la cererea noastră, membrii Comisiei de Dialog a Episcopiei, conduse de Inalt Prea Sfinţitul Arhiepiscop Nathaniel, s-au deplasat la Bucureşti, România, pentru întâlnirea din zilele de 25-27 februarie, 2008.  Comisia a fost alcătuită din Prea Cucernicii Preoţi: Laurenţiu Lazăr (Coordonator), Remus Grama, Catalin Mitescu, Ian Pac-Urar şi Romey Rosco.

Ajunsă la Bucureşti, delegaţia a participat la Sf. Liturghie de praznicul Sf. Mc. Policarp, la Mănăstirea Antim, iar apoi a fost primită la mănăstirile Pasărea şi Cernica.  Duminică 24 februarie, I.P.S. Sa Nathaniel a fost invitat să oficieze Sfânta Liturghie în Catedrala Patriarhiei, fiind asistat de preoţii Catedralei şi de cei din delegaţia Episcopiei.

În ziua următoare, delegaţia a fost cordial întâmpinată de către Prea Fericitul Părinte Patriarh Daniel, care a arătat un interes personal faţă de discuţiile ce au urmat, găzduind căteva mese precum şi o sesiune de lucru la reşedinţa Patriarhală.  Delegaţia Episcopiei noastre şi Comisia special constituită a Patriarhiei, prezidată de I.P.S. Arhiepiscop (acum, Mitropolit) Nifon al Târgoviştei şi alcătuită din I.P.S. Arhiepiscop Nicolae (Arhiepiscopia Ortodoxă Română din cele două Americi), Prea Sfinţitul Episcop Ciprian Câmpineanul -Vicar Patriarhal, P.C. Preoţi Mircea Uţă şi Ioan Armaşi - Consilieri Patriarhali, a întreţinut câteva runde de discuţii deschise, într-un spirit creştinesc, frăţesc şi plin de nădejde.  Discuţiile s-au încheiat printr’o Declaraţie Comună.

Pe lângă cele de mai sus, Comisia noastrã de dialog sperã sã fi fost de folos reprezentanţilor Bisericii din România spre o înţelegere mai bunã a realităţilor pastorale Americane, în contextul nejustificatei înfiinţări a auto-proclamatului Exarhat Român în America.
