ENTHRONEMENT OF PATRIARCH DANIEL
Visit of Archbishop Nathaniel & Delegation to Romania,
2007
His
Beatitude, Dr. DANIEL Ciobotea,
Archbishop of Bucharest,
Metropolitan of Muntenia & Dobrojea,
Locum Tenes of the Throne of Cezareea in Cappadocia,
Patriarch
of The Romanian Orthodox Church.
On September 30, 2007 Orthodox leaders, as well as high-ranking
government officials, and delegates from religious denominations
around the world gathered in Bucharest for the enthronement of
the new Patriarch Daniel. Our Archbishop Nathaniel represented
the ROEA, with Fr Grama (Representative of the Dept. of External
Affairs) and our Fr Laurence Lazar (Secretary of the Episcopate
Council and Dean of the Cathedral). It is a great honor for Fr
Laurence and for our Cathedral parish to have participated in
this very rare and significant event in the life of our mother
church.
Patriarch DANIEL was elected as successor to His Beatitude, TEOCTIST (Arapasu)
who fell asleep in the Lord following complications during a surgical
procedure in late July. Though Romania traces its Christian roots to the
Apostle Andrew in the first century, Patriarch DANIEL is the 6th
Patriarch since the Church of Romania was granted its autocephaly and
raised to the rank of 'patriarchate'.
The new Patriarch is very well known in both Orthodox and Ecumenical
circles throughout the world. Although it is not a guarantee to
succession, His Beatitude's election does continue the tradition of the
Metropolitan of Moldova and Bucovina (with its see in Iasi), ascending
to the throne of the patriarch. The new Patriarch served as Archbishop
of Iasi and Metropolitan of Moldova and Bucovina since the early 1990's.
Intru mulţi ani Prea Fericite Stăpāne!
